Specialty Poutines at The Crispy Spud

Crispy Spud's Newfie Poutine

When we hit the roads of summer to go visit the in-laws, we stop about twice a summer at this potato stand in Carleton Place, The Crispy Spud. An old chip truck on cinder blocks, it is located on Highway 15, it is family owned since 2011, and offers your usual food truck fare, like hot dogs and burgers and french fries. It is usually opened from May to October, but be aware that you’ll need to bring cash! They also have a big menu section for their Specialty Poutines, with 32 options to choose from in two sizes, small ($14) or large ($18). The selection includes things like Chili, Pepperoni, Hawaiian and Mushroom. Without consultation, we all decided to order one, looking forward to the fries, gravy and curds – and all the delicious extra toppings! While we waited for our food, we sat at one of the picnic…

Tacos Del Rancho justo lo que necesitaba

I woke up at 2 AM, awoken by the arrival of yet another snow dump. My alarm was set for 4 AM, for a United flight out of Ottawa which was originally scheduled at 6:25 but had already been delayed by half an hour the night before.  I knew the heavy snow would cause further delays and my layover in O’Hare was impossibly short to begin with. Perhaps for that reason, I couldn’t get back to sleep. Or perhaps I was too much aware there was no other flight to Tucson out of O’Hare. I was already assuming that I’d spend the night in Chicago and my plan B was a deep dish pizza adventure and a visit to the United Center to see the Blackhawks play the Predators. We landed late in O’Hare, but United had decided to hold the plane for the few of us who needed that…

Jason Rosso’s Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich

Marc-André and I had settled on Milestones for our lunch meeting, after a lenghty back-and-forth. We arrived at Milestones, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cara, and found some seats at a high table in the lounge area, by the window overlooking the intersection of Sussex and Rideau. Milestones new corporate chef, Jason Rosso, of Restaurant Makeover fame, created a bunch of new dishes for the chain. The new menu was launched a month ago. Amongst the new Rosso creation, you can find the Newcastle Cheddar and Garlic Mussels, the Sicilian Mussels, the Chopped Salad (grilled chicken, avocado, chick peas, feta cheese in a medley of chopped vegetables), the Montreal Stack (smoked meat, aged cheddar, caramelized onions, tomatoes and blackberry ketchup), the Canadian Brie and Pesto Flatbread, the Chicken Noodle & Shiitake Bowl. According to Cheapdude, Chef Rosso has created his own “swat team” that goes around to different…

Taco Rico got the job done

We landed in Fort Lauderdale after an uneventful flight. After going through all the necessary steps, we were soon on our way to our destination in Cutler Bay, a little over 45 minutes from the airport. Our breakfast, grabbed quickly at the Maple Leaf lounge at the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau airport, was long gone. The Waffle junior munched on some cheese on the plane, but both The Waffle and The Mrs. Waffle had nothing to eat. By the time the luggage was retrieved, the car rented and The Waffles on their way under the Florida Sun, it was way past lunchtime. We hit the I95-S, and since our journey would lead us all the way to the end of the Expressway, where we would hit the US1. I suggested that we wait until then to stop and eat, that surely we would see a spot along the way. There was a…

Doing the Hangover Brunch without the hangover

Back in May, the trendy OZ Kafé on Elgin introduced its Sunday Hangover Brunch. The owner confided in The Waffle that the goal was to attract the same branché clientèle who visited them the night before and who enjoyed a few “Pretty in Pinks” too many – a signature martini at OZ, which, I must add, was invented years ago by my wife and her then roomate Tara. So OZ’s Hangover Brunch is offered starting at 2:30 PM: “We do not want to compete with the places offering the traditional brunch on Elgin, we want to offer something different,” added Oz herself. Hence, people are invited to get brunchfaced, all the way to 9:00 PM – which means, of course, that if you do not want to get brunchfaced, you shouldn’t go on Sundays as their regular menu is not available. Whitout having had the pleasure of visiting Oz Kafé…
