Chickening Au Vieux Duluth

Sunday night, coming back from a very successful scouting trip at the Conservative Convention in Calgary, I couldn’t say no when the Waffle Jr. asked to go to a restaurant. Interestingly enough, we have some gift certificates to use Au Vieux Duluth, and that is where we headed. Au Vieux Duluth is a chain of 34 Greek-style restaurants hailing from Montreal. The first Vieux Duluth opened its doors on February 1982 on Duluth street in Montréal. Au Vieux Duluth’s winning formula focusses on grilled specialties and seafood dishes, generous portions and of course, the bring-your-own-Wine-and-Beer formula. The Hull location has moved north recently, and is now conveniently located in a new mini-mall, which includes an SAQ store. The place was really busy, as it usually is on Sunday evenings. Jason Rosso’s Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich

Marc-André and I had settled on Milestones for our lunch meeting, after a lenghty back-and-forth. We arrived at Milestones, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cara, and found some seats at a high table in the lounge area, by the window overlooking the intersection of Sussex and Rideau. Milestones new corporate chef, Jason Rosso, of Restaurant Makeover fame, created a bunch of new dishes for the chain. The new menu was launched a month ago. Amongst the new Rosso creation, you can find the Newcastle Cheddar and Garlic Mussels, the Sicilian Mussels, the Chopped Salad (grilled chicken, avocado, chick peas, feta cheese in a medley of chopped vegetables), the Montreal Stack (smoked meat, aged cheddar, caramelized onions, tomatoes and blackberry ketchup), the Canadian Brie and Pesto Flatbread, the Chicken Noodle & Shiitake Bowl. Is it Soup’herbe?

I had promised my family that we would go for our first Chelsea brunch of the year once I was done with shovelling. Its snows every day in Chelsea, it seems. I had suggested the Chelsea Pub, feeling that the warm and cozy atmosphere would be great. We arrived at the Pub, but alas, despite two cars in the parking lot and music blasting on the outdoor sound system, the Pub was closed. Turns out, they do not open until 11 am. Bummer. We were not interested in waiting, and the staff inside was not interested in opening early. So we hit the Old Chelsea road again, hoping another spot would be open. Thankfully, the Café Soup’Herbe just down the road was up and running. A vegetarian restaurant, Café Soup’Herbe opened in 1996. They are closed on Mondays, no doubt to recover from the Sunday Vegetarian Brunch, which they boast…

All-you-can-shrimp

Since the beginning of the month, Anthony had been harassing me. Some would argue he started harassing me long before then, but that’s beside the point. The point is that Red Lobster is back with its Endless Shrimp promotion, and Anthony wanted to go. And he didn’t want to go alone. And so he was harassing me. And so I reluctantly agreed, and made we arrangements with our respective partners and eventually settled on a date. For a limited time, you can eat all the shrimp you can handle. Apparently, it is the most popular promotion at Red Lobster. In fact, Red Lobster Blog tells us that “as a server this promotion is hell the first week, and hell on the weekends during peak business periods.” Noted. Also, from his point of view, ie as an employee, Endless Shrimp “is the single worst promotion ever created by Red Lobster.” And…

Burger Bonanza!

Lunch had arrived, and Marc-André and I needed to talk. It happens from time to time. He suggested that we head to the Mayflower on Elgin. I thought it was a good idea and I agreed. I like going to this English Pub, the food is good and the service friendly and efficient. It became an even better idea when we realized it was their Famous Burger Bonanza! But what does it even mean? Well, it means that on top of the four regular burgers the Mayflower offers to regulars and tourists alike, there is a whole new bonanza of burgers! There was no trace of the Boondoggle Burger the Mayflower once offered.
