Spécial saucisse!

Regular wafflers will know that when I go to Québec City, I often make sure to drop by Chez Ashton. And this Thanksgiving week-end was no different. After a morning shopping at Les Galeries de la Capitale, we made our way to Chez Ashton on 1st Avenue for lunch. It might have been the influence of the Waffle Jr., or it might have been the picture, but I ended up ordering a regular poutine with sausage. “Poutine régulière, spécial saucisses!” the cashier announced in her microphone. Ashton has 3 formats of Poutine. Small, Medium and Large would make sense. Nope: Bébé, Mini and Régulière. Go figure. Quickly, the tray was filled with our orders and we made our way to a quiet corner of the location. The poutine saucisse would not resist our assault! Ashton’s fries are really what makes me come back, I think. The potatoes they use are…

A British Poutine in Edmonton

A very busy day during our caucus strategy session in Edmonton prevented me from eating lunch at a decent hour. Not that I’m complaining. Eventually, I was able to escape during a break towards the end of the day, before our evening events. Nothing like lunch at 4:30 PM, Mountain Time! One of my favorite spot in Edmonton is the Sherlock Holmes Pub. It is conveniently located, has a laid-back, warm and cozy feel to it and has a great selection of beers. The architecture is reminiscent of a British pub. Elementary, Watson: Lots of rich woods, ceiling beams, white walls. On them, you’ll find British memorabilia, Sherlock stuff and some local items. The establishment, opened in 1987, is part of a chain of British and Irish pubs across the city. Being alone, I sat at a small table to the right of the bar. The place was filling with…

La Poutine du Parc Vert

We left the Floribell Resort early Sunday afternoon to go home after having had a good time with family and friends. Frolicking on the beach, swimming in the lake, drinking a few cold ones. Life was good. Especially since yours truly became International Champion of Water Frisbee. But that’s another story. So we left Saint-Élie-de-Caxton and started looking for a place to have a quick bite. We hit Road 351 then Road 153 before arriving in Saint-Barnabé and spotting a Casse-Croûte just off the main street. The place didn’t look busy, but there were a few cars in the parking lot. The classic Pepsi sign told us that we were at le Casse-Croûte du Parc Vert. Built in 2005, Casse-Croûte du Parc Vert is located downtown St-Barnabé Nord, such as it is. It is basically about 20 minutes from Trois-Rivières, Shawinigan and Louiseville. They claim that everything on their menu…

A Bofinger in Montreal

The NDP Convention was over, the set had been struck and delegates were leaving Montreal happy and motivated. My train wasn’t leaving for another couple of hours, and fellow delegate Tania had to wait for her plane. We decided to look for a place to celebrate a successful Convention, and started wandering the streets of Montreal, ending on Ste-Catherine, heading west. A new sign on University street intrigued me: Bofinger. But more importantly, there was an umbrella featuring St-Ambroise’s Blonde. We found our spot. Turns out, it was an American BBQ joint. I wasn’t about to turn around! I remembered hearing about a BBQ spot called Bofinger that had opened a couple of years ago in NDG. Turns out, this is the same guys! Bofinger Barbecue Smokehouse first opened in the NDG neighborhood of Montreal in 2007. The place was immediately successful, and there are now 3 other locations: on…

Gros Jambon!

After an interesting discussion about the future of the NDP in Quebec, and after two hours of discussion about the NDP Quebec section‘s constitution, ND and I left Montreal’s Palais des Congrès, looking for a lunch spot. We walked a few blocks south, and hit the unassuming and narrow storefront of Le Gros Jambon, a Diner on Notre-Dame. The spot opened a year ago in an old jewellery store, but it almost feels like its been there forever – except it is too clean and too slick here and there to really fool you. Still, le Gros Jambon is quite tight – an actual Gros Jambon could have problems navigating between the two rows of stools. The place was opened by Travis Champion and Monica Terlecki, who also run L’Orignal, a few blocks away. The decor is retro-cool, with the wall stacked with vintage photographs and posters, a bunch of…
