Specialty Poutines at The Crispy Spud

Crispy Spud's Newfie Poutine

When we hit the roads of summer to go visit the in-laws, we stop about twice a summer at this potato stand in Carleton Place, The Crispy Spud. An old chip truck on cinder blocks, it is located on Highway 15, it is family owned since 2011, and offers your usual food truck fare, like hot dogs and burgers and french fries. It is usually opened from May to October, but be aware that you’ll need to bring cash! They also have a big menu section for their Specialty Poutines, with 32 options to choose from in two sizes, small ($14) or large ($18). The selection includes things like Chili, Pepperoni, Hawaiian and Mushroom. Without consultation, we all decided to order one, looking forward to the fries, gravy and curds – and all the delicious extra toppings! While we waited for our food, we sat at one of the picnic…

How the mighty have fallen

I used to go to Local Heroes regularly after sporting events, wither hockey or softball. My usual location was on Bank St. It was a neat spot filled with paraphernalia and lots of TVs. Founded in 1981 by former Ottawa Rough Rider Mark Kosmos, Local Heroes Sports Bar & Grill became popular for selling chicken wings by the pound, one of the first spot to do so in Ottawa. It dubbed itself the “King of Wings and Ribs”. It expanded across the National Capital region, opening locations on Clyde Avenue, Bank Street, and Carling Avenue in Kanata. Another wave of locations were opened a few years later, at Bells Corners, on St. Laurent Boulevard, in Stittsville and at Scotia Bank Place. But competition is tough, and most of the Local Heroes have now fallen, the Bank street location going under in May 2013. Hometown has now settled in that location.…

Chives’ talkin’

For our first dinner during our Halifax getaway weekend, we decided to go to Chives, which was on a shortlist of recommendations from the Waffler nation. I had also heard good things about Chives Canadian Bistro, although had been warned that it could be a bit pricey. The restaurant was quite busy, which is normal for a Saturday night – thankfully, we were able to make online reservations for a late dinner date. The restaurant was quite busy, which is normal for a Saturday night – thankfully, we were able to make online reservations for a late dinner date. Chives opened in December 2001 and since then it has gained an excellent reputation, winning numerous awards notably in The Coast. The restaurant is in downtown Halifax, on Barrington Street, which runs adjacent from the famous Halifax harbour. The outside features a weird doll display, representing something. I don’t know. The 2nd storey…

KFC’s Festivus for the rest of us!

As previously discussed, KFC is offering a sweet deal for Christmas. Merry, Merry! Because nothing says “Happy Holidays” like Free Fried Chicken. So when you purchase a Festive Meal For one… You get a free sandwich voucher!!! If you want more free chicken, you can instead purchase any Family Feast (Your choice of 8, 12, 15, or 20-piece Original Recipe Chicken, with fries, gravy, two more sides, and a 2L Pepsi. ) and you’ll get a $10 Gift Voucher to use on your next family feast! I had to take advantage of Colonel Santa’s offer, so I made my way to the St-Joseph location in Hull. But since I was alone, and since I didn’t need a Family Feast on my own, I had to go for the Festive Meal for One. Merry, Merry! There were a few other customers in the restaurant, but I didn’t need to wait before…

Milestones’ Meatloaf

I go to Milestones Grill + Bar from time to time, mostly the location near Parliament Hill. Not too often, as I find the faux-branché atmosphere sometimes a little on the annoying side. Milestones, which was founded in Vancouver in 1989, has grown fast since Cara bought the chain in 2002, and now has 45 locations in British-Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. I went there for lunch with a bunch of colleagues between two meetings, and hesitated for some time as I studied the menu. Despite the “a little of everything for everyone” approach, I was really undecided. Salads, Sandwiches, Burgers and Wraps, Pasta, Asian-style, Steaks, Chicken and Seafood. They even have a Gluten-Free selection, which I assume is appreciated by those on a Gluten-Free diet. The food is generally good, if overpriced. Which perhaps leads to the aforementioned hesitation. After a few minutes, I settled on Milestone’s version of comfort…
