Specialty Poutines at The Crispy Spud

Crispy Spud's Newfie Poutine

When we hit the roads of summer to go visit the in-laws, we stop about twice a summer at this potato stand in Carleton Place, The Crispy Spud. An old chip truck on cinder blocks, it is located on Highway 15, it is family owned since 2011, and offers your usual food truck fare, like hot dogs and burgers and french fries. It is usually opened from May to October, but be aware that you’ll need to bring cash! They also have a big menu section for their Specialty Poutines, with 32 options to choose from in two sizes, small ($14) or large ($18). The selection includes things like Chili, Pepperoni, Hawaiian and Mushroom. Without consultation, we all decided to order one, looking forward to the fries, gravy and curds – and all the delicious extra toppings! While we waited for our food, we sat at one of the picnic…

Lunch in the Works

Lunch in the Works

It had been over a year since Ms. Waffle and I had ventured together to the Ontario side of the Ottawa river for a lunch date on location. After a stop at Decathlon on St-Laurent, we had a false start at the Boston Pizza in the same mall parking lot: there was a line-up and Boston Pizza is not worth the wait. So we headed south on St-Laurent in search of another spot to eat out. We soon spied The WORKS, who’s patio didn’t look too busy. We were soon sitting down and peering at the menu. Established in 2001 in Ottawa, The WORKS is now a well-established chain of craft burgers, with 27 locations across Ontario. Owned by MTY since 2017, the chain’s plan is to expand in Manitoba, Alberta and British-Columbia. The chain went through a re-branding last year, The WORKS Gourmet Burger Bistro becoming The WORKS Craft…

Super Bowl Home Party 2021

Super Bowl Home Party 2021

The kids were disappointed because for the first time in a long time, we had to stay home for the Super Bowl. Feeling their pain, I made a deal with them. Plan the menu. I’ll execute it.So they did their part. The menu included a cover page and three distinct sections. On the cover, you will note the team logos, the fields, complete with goalposts, and what I can only assume are characters from Among Us, one near a bench and the other dropping the ball. SUS! The ‘Appetizer’ section called for french fries, pigs in a blanket, chips and veggies with dip. Simple enough. The ‘Main Meals’ section was setting the stage for chili, chicken wings and ribs. You will note the NFL simplified logo, a red square and the Pepsi logo, with a chicken wing in the middle. For dessert, cake and ice cream and a Tom Brady-style…

Fries for Good

Fries for Good

From May 8 to May 21, a portion of the proceeds from all McDonald’s fries sold will go to help support the Canadian Red Cross. Money raised by Canadians as part of the Fries For Good initiative will go directly to the Canadian Red Cross, who will then divide the proceeds raised among various funds, including the Canadian Emergencies & COVID-19 Response Fund, the Nova Scotia Stronger Together Fund, and disaster response and preparedness work across Canada. McDonald’s says that Fries for Good is an initiative that will also help Canadian potato farmers. “Our agriculture partners have been hit hard by COVID-19, and we are continually looking for ways to support them as we navigate the new and unforeseen challenges of this pandemic,” said John Betts, President and CEO, McDonald’s Canada. “Canadian farmers are a driving force in our business and we hope Canadians’ love for our fries will allow us to not…

Fusion Poutine

I’ve been meaning to try New York Fries‘ Butter Chicken Poutine for some time now and I got the opportunity at the Bayshore food court, where I was shopping for Christmas present. The Butter Chicken Poutine was introduced to NYF’s line up in 2011, along with the Braised Beef Poutine. As far as I know, NYF was the first to offer it. Whoever thought that mixing Quebec’s national dish with India’s most popular curry is a genius. I ordered a regular size poutine. You know the drill: fries on the bottom, followed by cheese curds. Then, the twist: butter chicken instead of the classic brown gravy. The fries were good, as usual. The cheese curds weren’t squeaking, which is always sad. The key, though, was the butter chicken itself. I was expecting bland, but it wasn’t. The tomato sauce was mildly spicy, with some heat, but not too much. There…
