Deli Chenoy’s is goner in Gatineau – a Waffle exclusive

The Deli Chenoy’s brand is taking another step towards oblivion as the owners of the Gatineau franchise announced this evening that they had put the final touch on their rebranding, getting rid of Chenoy’s in favour of another famous smoked meat chain. The location, which opened in the Complexe Lumière (otherwise known as Cinéma 9) in 1997, is now officially a Nickels. This leaves the Dollard-des-Ormeaux Chenoy’s as the last one standing for the chain, which was established in 1936. The management team remains the same, so it’ll be interesting to see the transition. It is not the first time Nickels Delicatessen is opening stores in the National Capital Region. I recall one location on the Greber boulevard and another one on Dalhousie street in Ottawa. In the early 1990s, Lawrence and Peter Mammas partnered with Paul Sara, René Angélil and Céline Dion to create the restaurant chain Nickels. Originally…

A Toast to our Founding Fathers

A Toast to our Founding Fathers

For one evening, we were asked to forget about the political negotiations and intrigues that led to the birth of Canada to reflect on a more important question: what did the Fathers of Confederation (and their female guests) eat and drink at the Charlottetown Conference of 1864? Apparently, wine and extravagant meals played a vital role in convincing the Maritime provinces to join Confederation. Well, then. A Toast to our Founding Fathers was the first event in the Canadian Museum of History’s series of tastings inspired by historical events. Thanks to Audrey’s instigation and LP’s organizing skills, 15 of us were set to feast on a four-course dinner inspired by the Conference, prepared by the Museum resident chef Michael Lasalle (formerly at Chez Edgar). To wash everything down, a wine tasting led by renowned sommelier Véronique Rivest, the first woman ever to reach the podium at the World’s Best Sommelier…

Bistro Manchester to open in Chelsea

The Waffle has learned that a new restaurant will soon open in Chelsea, at the corner of the 105 and Old Chelsea Road: the Bistro Manchester. Chelsea’s food scene has been thriving lately. L’Orée du Bois and Les Fougères are great tables, and the arrival of Mama Theresa was a welcomed addition to the food scene, which includes familiar spots such as De Luigi, Chelsea Shawarma, the Chelsea Pub and the Chelsea Smokehouse’s Le Resto. Behind the Manchester’s food offering will be the team from Routine Poutine in Gatineau, who admitted as much on Facebook. The Bistro Manchester scheduled opening date is in mid-October.
