Celebrating Saint Patrick’s at Kettleman’s

Celebrating Saint Patrick’s at Kettleman’s

After winning the Soccer 7s Men Rec division 1 championship with Sporting Yamela 7-5 against the Red Star, we went to Irene’s for a celebratory pint. Irene’s has been the watering hole for my former teamates for years. I say former teammates because Yamela had called me as an emergency replacement from my current Chelsea Panthers team to replace their injured goalie. At the end of the night, as had been my habit in my Yamela’s days, I stopped at Kettleman’s Bagel Co. across the street to bring home a few bagels for the next morning. Two guys were busy working the dough, getting ready for the morning’s business. A few patrons were eating bagels and chatting away, a late night snack after an evening of drinking, it sounded like. I ordered my dozen Montreal-style, sesame seeds bagels, and then noticed something unusual in the refrigerated counter. Amongst Kettleman’s regular…

Poutinefest is starting today

Taking a page from the popular Ribfest, the Sparks Street Mall is moving forward for three days of poutine eating. Outlets were getting ready to open this morning – but unlike Ribfest, the aromas weren’t filling the air. Yet, Golden fries, cheese curds and war gravy will be served by over 20 different outlets during Poutinefest, from Friday November 15th to Sunday November 17th! Friday afternoon is the Poutine Eating Contest – some have suggested that The Waffle should take part, but Ms Waffle has vetoed the plan. You’ll be able to ample your classic poutine, but also all kinds of variations. Poutine Passes sounds like a great option if you wish to sample a variety of poutines. For $20.00, will you get 5 tickets good for 8 oz. poutine samples. Poutine Passes will be available at the Sparks Street office or under the Central tent. Here is a sample…

My Bacon Explosion

Ken was the first one to alert me to this new smoked delicacy called the Bacon Explosion, back in 2011. “If this doesn’t say “I love Canada” – nothing does. Mind you, your heart may end up stopping after simply reading it,” he said. The recipe was from the BBQ Addicts website and had slowly gone viral, with the New York Times publishing it’s adaptation of the recipe. BBQ Addicts came up with the recipe after being asked by Bacon Today to provide some barbecue bacon recipes. So the BBQ Sausage Recipe of all Recipes was born. I promised myself I would try it out, and I finally I got around to do it, inviting Scott and his crew to come over and help us making and mostly eating it. Here’s what I used: 2 pounds of thick cut bacon 2 pounds of Hot Italian sausage meat 1 bottle of…

Chicago in Gatineau

Mrs. Waffle was craving pizza. It does happen regularly. Thankfully, that very day we had just received the new Menu Gatineau directory, which of course includes many pizzerias from our area. I perused the menu, looked at Cortina Pizza Riviera and Pizza Maisonneuve, skipped Gabriel Pizza, Dora Pizza, Chez Gerry and Pizza Presto to end up on the Bellavio Trattoria Pizzeria page. Something immediately jumped at me – Unique à Gatineau! Pizza Style Chicago. Oh yeah!!! What a great idea! I’ve had Chicago Pizza a few times and it is a totally different culinary experience. From our last trip to the Wind City, a few of us even discussed the possibility of opening our own Chicago-Style pizzeria in the National Capital region. Since I’m not holding my breath on that ever happening, the fact that someone else had the idea was exciting to say the least. Mrs. Waffle was equally…

The BK Stuffed (Sprinkled) Steakhouse

Burger King is once again trying to bring some heat to their burger line (to their Steakhouse XT line to be specific), this time in the form of a jalapeños and cheddar stuffed pattie, the basis of their new BK Stuffed Steakhouse. Jalapeños and Cheddar. In it, not on it, says Burger King. The stuffed burger was introduced in Canada on February 24th, 2011, 6 weeks after first bringing it south of the border. This new menu addition is available across Canada for a limited time at a suggested retail price of $4.99. Here is how the King is describing their new creation: “When you take a flame-broiled patty, stuff it with jalapeños and processed cheddar cheese on the inside, top it with creamy poblano sauce, ripe tomato and crisp iceberg lettuce, and put it all inside a toasted, corn-dusted bun … well, you’ve got yourself a fire hazard. What…
